Massachusetts offers some of the most generous energy efficiency rebates in the country through the Mass Save program. If you’re building a new home or multifamily building in Massachusetts, a HERS Rating is the key that unlocks those rebates.

What Is Mass Save?

Mass Save is a statewide energy efficiency program administered by Massachusetts utilities including Eversource, National Grid, and others. It offers rebates and incentives for energy-efficient new construction and renovations, funded by a small charge on everyone’s electric and gas bills.

How to Qualify for Mass Save Rebates

1. Hire a Mass Save-approved HERS rater before or during design
2. Work with the rater to design your home to target a qualifying HERS score
3. Complete projected (design) HERS Rating before or at permit application
4. Build to plan — the rater will do inspection(s) during construction
5. Pass final blower door and duct leakage tests
6. Receive final HERS Rating report
7. Your rater submits to Mass Save on your behalf
8. Rebate check arrives within 8–12 weeks
